I’m Jayne Harkin, and my business is called Jayne Cares
Welcome to Quick Q&A! & thank you for taking part. Let’s begin by asking what you do, what products & services do you offer?
Thank you, we (that’s you interviewing me, which is weird) offer pet sitting and dog walking for owners who would like us to look after their pets in their own homes
Do you have much experience and/or do you need qualifications? (apologies if you’re a vet, I do recognise your training and qualifications but this is a generic quiz)
Plenty of experience with cats and dogs of my own over the years, I’ve had 3 cats and 4 dogs, and I’ve lost a few through illness or tragic accident, so I know how much they mean to people, they really are part of the family
Where are you based and what area do you cover? (eg Boughton Monchelsea and about 10 miles radius)
We’re based in Sutton Valence and cover about a 12 mile radius I guess
What do you love most about what you do?
Oh, meeting new furries and their hoomans, I’m still surprised by different animals’ -personalities and habits, it’s always a learning curve
On the flipside, what would you say is your biggest challenge, day to day?
Keeping cats but especially dogs safe. Not usually a problem indoors but you do have to be on constant alert when talking dogs for a walk. We always keep dogs on a lead of course, and we hardly ever walk more than one at a time unless from the same household.
I know we’re probably missing out on more money but I’d much rather be on the safe side. Animals – yours or others – can be unpredictable, so we reduce the risk of ‘incident’ as much as possible. Fingers crossed, we’ve not had an issue walking any pet so far…

I guess we’ll keep on doing what we do as long as we enjoy it. You are trying to broaden our network a bit and engage with other(non-competing) pet care businesses in our neck of the woods…
That’s really interesting. And finally, if you weren’t running this business, what would you be doing?
Probably running a small cafe in deepest Devon
